Assistant Professor, Core Theology
DIVISION OF CORE AND CENTERS FOR EXCELLENCE
The University of St. Thomas (UST) is a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education. Located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, UST is seeking applicants for full-time Core Fellows in the Division of Liberal Studies. Core Fellows form the nucleus of the permanent teaching faculty dedicated to the undergraduate Core Curriculum, which operates as a distinct department in the Division. Applicants should share the Core's vision of and commitment to a classical liberal education in the Catholic Tradition in a way that embraces the thought of St. John Henry Newman and Josef Pieper. Core Fellows will teach particular academic subjects in their own right but from a philosophical perspective and with an eye to the interrelations across the core curriculum.
Pending budgetary approval, faculty hired as Core Fellows will begin work in August of 2025 and be appointed at the Assistant Professor rank. For this position, we are interested in applicants who possess the necessary qualifications to teach our three core literature surveys: THEOC 1301 "Faith, Reason, and Revelation," THEOC 2301 "Scripture and Salvation History" and THEOC 3301 "The Return to God."
A record of teaching excellence is required; competence to teach undergraduates in more than one discipline, and a liberal arts or great books background are both highly desirable. New hires in the Core should be willing and able to teach up to one section per semester in an online asynchronous format for our ABSN (Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program. Teaching in this modality may not be necessary, but preference will be given to those willing to take on the challenge if needed.
Though we prize excellence in teaching above all else, we believe that good teaching must be informed by ongoing independent scholarship. Therefore, prospective members of the Core Fellows must demonstrate a serious research agenda.
